Towards The Sun wins where I Can't Understand That fails in my opinion. It's a steady slower paced song, but not one that lumbers along. Another from the initial session that included Slave Song, etc, this was recorded live as live acoustic guitar and vocal first, with the overdubs added almost straight away.
The bass on the song is gorgeous, and incredibly deep toned for an acoustic (because it was plugged in with the tone completely down). It's an incredibly fluid bassline for saying that it was improvised on the spot, influenced by players like Jaco Pastorius, who did some incredible work as a session player for Joni Mitchell etc, as well as his solo work and of course Weather Report.
After that there is an harmonica overdub. Yes, it is an overdub. I hate to admit it, but I don't want to lie.
What also helps this is a decent set of lyrics for the most part too, with good imagery for me (must have been in the writing zone). A nice and thought provoking song that doesn't outlast it's stay, and has a melody that nicely matches the message rather than it taking over the message, as is the case sometimes these days.
