So the ninth blog post in nine days is a continuation from yesterday, because that was going on for so long that I thought I’d better split it up. We’ll see if it needs to be carried on for a part three, or if I can stop rambling on about the subject before we get to that point!
So, I left off a bit early talking about film and TV...
Lost & Found & Rewound is a fascinating programme, where the three hosts revisit films that they rented on videotapes from video rental shops back in the day. They discuss their thoughts on the films, and anything else that they can think of!
Anyway, now to carry on from there...
THE BEATLES (together & solo)
As a big fan of The Beatles (and their solo careers), I’m very interested in hearing different podcasts about just this subject, as there is so much scope there to choose from!
2 Legs: A Paul McCartney Podcast - Named as a nod to the McCartney deep cut song 3 Legs from the Ram album, the two hosts discuss the life and career of Sir Paul McCartney, occasionally with special guests that include other knowledgeable people, authors, and even perhaps *pun-alerts* another day someone named Albert who is an uncle!
Glass Onion is a programme about the life and career of John Lennon, hosted by Anthony Rotunno. This guy talks about everything, including the music from his solo and Beatle years, other artists that he’s worked with, the causes he talked about, his relationships, films, and lots of other stuff, often including special guests discussing with him.
Paul Or Nothing (which still has the wrong spelling for McCartney on its thumbnail picture) sees host Sam Whiles working his way through the entire Paul McCartney catalogue, but the interesting side is that when it started, he had only heard about three albums by Paul post-Beatles, so he’s going into them for the most part having not heard them! He does have guests here and there, and there are “bonus episodes” on other subjects about Sir Paul!
Now the Take It Away podcast is no longer releasing frequent episodes, as they actually did what they intended, which was to discuss a different album by Paul McCartney each episode. Now they do more episodes on occasions where Paul releases other material. This looks at the facts of the songs, including structure, lyrical content, the music composition, and recording. I’ve listened to every episode, and look forward to others when Paul releases something new!
Talk More Talk is a show where Ken Michaels, Kit O’Toole, Kenneth Womack, Tom Hunyady, and Joe Mayo discuss everything about the solo Beatles, and occasionally The Beatles as well. Once again they sometimes have guests and, quite often, they guest on other Beatles related shows (Ken Michaels alone has been involved in over two thousand programmes about The Beatles).
Things We Said Today is a show where three presenters discuss all things about The Beatles past, present and future, because that’s a catalogue that continues to give new things. They’ve had some FABulous interviews over the years as well!
When They Was Fab is another show about The Beatles, looking at all things their group and solo careers, including some interviewers with scholars, authors, musicians, and people that have worked with “the boys”! As with the other Beatles-related shows, I‘ve listened to every episode, and continue to listen to it when a new episode comes out!
OTHER MUSIC SHOWS
Bob Dylan Album By Album is a show where presenter Ben Burrell discusses a different album each episode, looking into the music, what’s going on around the time, and anything else to do with the subject!
Digging Deep With Robert Plant is a show where Robert discusses songs from his more than fifty career in the music industry, talking about the writing and recording of those songs.
Fish On Friday - now I have to be honest, this one I need to catch up on! Iconic progressive rock singer Fish holds an open chat every Friday on his Facebook page, where anyone can ask the guy any question that they like. This show obviously has a very improvisational feel to it, because there is now preparation whatsoever.
On the show Now Hear This the two presenters each pick an album that the other doesn’t know, and then they discuss it.
